The rugby kit fabric
One of the great properties of polyester for Junior Rugby is that it has fantastic wicking properties which draw moisture away from the body. Wicking fabrics are also referred to as being breathable – that is, they let air in and sweat out. Breathable fabrics have tiny pores in them, larger than water vapour molecules (so these can get out) but much smaller than drops of rain (so these can’t get in).
Unlike cotton, our hi-tech polyester absorbs very little water, Cotton will absorb 7% of its weight in water, nylon will absorb 4%, polyester only 0.4%. Cotton will therefore hang onto your sweat, making your garment heavy and unpleasantly clammy. Instead, water is carried along the fibre, away from the body and evaporates from the surface of the clothes so you stay cool and dry.
Polyester is very quick-drying, but even when wet its strength is hardly affected. Polyester is also a great easy care fabric, being very resistant to creasing. This is because it has a high thermal stability – it has a very high melting temperature of 200ºC. The fabric is set in shape with high heat during manufacture and keeps its shape well once set, so it sheds accidental creases easily but retains deliberate pleats or moulding.
